Computer Configuration Recommendations |
|
The below computer configuration recommendations are intended to help protect users from possible problems while using the COCC Blackboard Course Management System. In addition to the below details, you may also want to run a Browser Verification Check, which will help determine if your Operating System, Browser and Plugins are setup correctly.
Pop-up BlockingConfigure Pop-up Blocking software so that pop-ups are allowed for "cocc.edu" web sites. At an absolute minimum browser pop-ups should be allowed for "owa.ad.cocc.edu". Related information available at http://www.cocc.edu/Help/Web/Popups/default.aspx.
Known to often cause the Login button, various links and other images to NOT be displayed.
Configure any installed Ad Blocking software (such as Norton Internet Security) to allow content from "cocc.edu". This is often required since many ad blocking programs block COCC URLs that include the ".ad." in their path, which is the case for both COCC's web email and Blackboard.
If you have Norton Internet Security click here for help.
More information is also available at http://www.cocc.edu/Help/Web/default.aspx#adblocking.
Enable CookiesBlackboard requires that your browser support cookies. A "cookie" is a very small text file placed on your hard drive by a Web Page server. It is essentially your identification card, and cannot be executed as code or deliver viruses. It is uniquely yours and can only be read by the server that gave it to you.
How do I enable cookies in my Browser? (http://blackboard.cocc.edu/CompRecommend/cookies)
Browser Shortcut to Blackboard LoginWe suggest that you use http://www.cocc.edu/login/blackboard/default.aspx as your Blackboard login favorite/shortcut as this is the best place to start from when accessing Blackboard. Bypassing this page and pointing at a later page in the Blackboard login process has been known to have problems causing repeated login attempts to sometimes be necessary. More information is available at http://www.cocc.edu/Help/Web/default.aspx#favorite.
Window's Internet SettingsBy default Windows is configured to reuse existing browser windows when a new web page is attempted to be opened from an email message or other source requesting a given web page to be opened. This reuse of existing browser windows can cause an existing Blackboard session to be reused for a new web page and in turn cause the existing Blackboard session to be lost. In most cases this will not present a serious problem, however when completing an exam or other assignment this can be serious.
To change this default Windows setting you may follow the below steps. 1) Open the Internet Properties Control Panel. * Select Start --> Control Panel, or Start --> Settings --> Control Panel 2) Select the Advanced tab in the Internet Properties control panel. 3) Scroll through the Advanced settings dialog and UNCHECK "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts". 4) Click OK to save the change.
Protect Your Computer's SecurityYour computer's security is critical to your privacy and the stability of your computer.
Browser Font SizeOne common problem is for Blackboard's font size to appear unreadibly small. If this occurs make sure that your browser font setting is set appropriately to ensure readability. Although some web pages are not affected by this setting, Blackboard is designed to scale based upon your browser's font setting. For Internet Explorer this setting is available under the View menu and then under Text Size. Internet Explorer 7 also has this option available under the "Page" toolbar button. The default setting is Medium so selecting that value is likely your best choice if it is not already selected. In FireFox this option is under View / Text Size as well, but the options are a little different.
Recommended SoftwareThe following software is recommended to have installed on your computer as there are many cases where this software will be required to view course documents.
Run a Browser Verification Check for Blackboard access.
