When first attempting to use Blackboard's Chat feature you are likely to find that Chat takes a long time to load and that you will be prompted to install Java for use with your web browser. Since in most cases Blackboard will initiate this Java installation when needed you do not need to follow any of the below steps unless this automatic install has not proven to work on your computer.
Troubleshooting
If you are encountering problems getting Java set up on your computer, the below information should help test your configuration and if needed to find the correct version of Java to install.
- Make sure Java is enabled on your machine
- Test your installation of Java.
You can also test using Sun's Test Java Virtual Machine page. This is the litmus test, seeing as how they invented Java. It may be too strict for some installations.
- If Java is not enabled on your machine (or you suspect it is not enabled, despite our testing above), you may enable Java by following these directions.
- If you enabled Java, but still have trouble using the chat application, you may have an older version of Java installed. You may check your version of Java on this web site.
- If you do not have Java installed, or have an older version, you should install a new version on your computer. Follow the directions for installing java on this web site.
